EXCERPT

Jax lit up his cigarette and handed me back my zippo. “It’s cold, wet, and late.”
“She has to come out.” I clamped the cigarette between my teeth, taking a drag of it and filling my lungs with smoke.
Smoking was bad, but I chose the vice over all other addictions. It helped me calm my nerves before a concert when I was stressed—or just waiting.
“Who’s coming out?”
“Never mind, you can leave,” I suggested not wanting to give him an explanation. We drove in separate cars, and he lived in Renton, about thirty minutes west of the city. “It won’t be long, and I’m going home afterward.”
The café was about to close in less than twenty minutes. She had to come out soon.
“Hmm,” He took a drag of his cigarette, let the smoke out in a sequence of circles and gazed at me. “The pretty brunette?”
“Can you blame me?”
“No, but you go more for the blonde type. Easy, fast, and goodbye.”
“There’s something about Sadie.”
“She has a name,” he laughed. “She’s way out of your league. If I were you, I wouldn’t waste my time with her.”
“I have to try.”
“She got to you, didn’t she? I never thought I’d see the day that you’d chase someone.”
I shrugged, unable to respond to his comment. There’s something about Sadie that pulled me to her. I wanted to taste her, to find out what it was about her that I wanted so badly. No one had ever gotten under my skin—and it only took her a few beats.
“Good luck, Hades.” He extinguished his half-smoked cigarette before tossing it away in the trash can.
Ten minutes after Jax left, she came out of the café. Turning to her left, she walked at a fast pace.
“Stop following me. It’s creepy,” she stopped at the red light, waiting for the green to continue walking.
“It’s after midnight.”
I hated that she wasn’t taking a cab or walking with someone else. Downtown Seattle wasn’t a safe place after midnight. Following her wasn’t just about finding out more about her, but also making sure she arrived home safely.
“Interesting. Eleven thirty is after midnight?” she sassed me.
“It’s not safe for you to walk by yourself.”
“Seems like I’m not alone.” She continued walking fast, not stopping for anything.
Once we arrived at a tall steel building, she halted looking for something inside her purse. When she opened the main door, she turned toward me and smiled. “Thank you for the company. Next time you might want to try walking beside me.”
“Try not to walk by yourself so late at night.”
“Good night, Mr. Hades.”
